• Art

  Art enables the students to express and communicate their thoughts, ideas, imagination, and understanding of themselves and the world around them. Students will study the artwork of renowned artists, allowing them to observe reproductions or several works by the same artist. Each student will study artists and their work during the course of one year.
  
  Art expresses the thought, worldview, and artistic style of the day. Students study the art of a time period in conjunction with their humanities unit, observing and discussing specific works of art.

  
  Hands-on experience with art in different mediums is offered once a week with an art teacher, allowing students to experiment and learn different techniques.

  
  Classes will take field trips to museums, galleries, and other locations so students may see fine art firsthand.

• Foreign Languages

  The grammar stage of Spanish begins with simple vocabulary in Pre-K and progresses to the alphabet, simple phrases, sentences, and questions. In second grade the students begin to read print and speak conversationally.
  
  Beginning in third-grade students study Latin. Latin significantly improves verbal skills, mathematical reasoning powers, and strengths in other academic areas. We view Latin as a foundational aspect of our classical program. Each year, the students learn 500-600 words in Latin as well as the grammar necessary to master this ancient language. By graduation, students should be able to read on an intermediate level in Latin, parse and diagram complex English sentences and draw out the meaning of hundreds of difficult English words based on their knowledge of Latin.

• Music

  Music has been an influential aspect of all cultures since the beginning of time.
  
  It is our desire to incorporate music into each student’s life in three specific areas:

  
  Hands-on experience through personal participation in musical activity, allowing students to express themselves and enjoy the art of music. Each student will have music class once a week with a professional music teacher.

  
  Within the music class, instruction will be offered in the academics of music: reading notes, learning about the various musical instruments, the components of an orchestra, and so forth.

  
  The study of famous composers and their work each year. Listening to the works of the great composers and growing familiar with their music, giving the students an ear to recognize and appreciate the composers’ works.
