Math should not be viewed as a separate entity but should be integrated into the daily experiences of the students. It is imperative that students not only learn skills but also understand what causes the processes used to work and the meaning of the facts learned, and to discover when and how to apply them to problem solving. As a student learns how to do math, he simultaneously understands concepts of math. Manipulatives are used throughout the curriculum to allow students to gain conceptual understanding through concrete means before moving on to the abstract. Throughout the learning process, three steps are emphasized: building, saying, writing. Building with manipulatives incorporates the visual, kinesthetic, and tactile; saying taps into the auditory; and writing bridges the concrete and the abstract. |
